Cultural parallels in the cinema of Yakutia and Korea

The article analyzes the basic cultural parallels in contemporary types and genres of Yakut and Korean films. Based on a cultural analysis, theoretical grounds of cultural parallelism suggest a juxtaposition of one national film with a similar phenomenon in the system of another: a comparative study of directors’ works as well as a comparative analysis of characters of various films. Having analyzed different national cinematography of Korea and Yakutia, one can draw cultural parallels in a plot structure and a system of images, find similarities between a story and a situation. Main cultural universals on which the comparison is based are people’s traditional belief, religious and mythological views, spiritual and moral values. The most common genres of Yakut and Korean films are parable and drama. The films are interesting in educational terms. The films have humanist ideas and bring to the forefront issues of personality, moral choice and faith, the formation of character. Several codes of realism can be distinguished in the films: performers may not be professional actors; “natural behavior” - the performers’ play is completely authentic; simple words, atmosphere, clothing - a convincing demonstration of the surrounding realities; shooting in nature - impressive visual shooting of picturesque landscapes of Korea and Yakutia can be noted. The films’ plots are universal despite the fact that each has its own national feature. The analysis of cultural parallels in the films of Yakutia and Korea expands scientific understanding of film processes taking place in the modern world.
